A Presença do Futuro

O III Congresso Internacional “Marx em Maio”, organizado pelo Grupo de Estudos Marxistas, vai decorrer de 3 a 5 de Maio na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. O evento pretende celebrar os 200 anos do nascimento de Karl Marx. Integrei a Comissão Científica do encontro e participarei nele, com entusiasmo, logo no primeiro dia num painel sobre arte e religião. A minha comunicação tem o título “A Presença do Futuro: Marxismo e Cristianismo, Luta de Classes e Fraternidade Humana no Pensamento do Dominicano Herbert McCabe”. Eis o resumo:

O influente ensaio “A Luta de Classes e o Amor Cristão” (“The Class Struggle and Christian Love”) foi publicado em 1980. Escrito pelo frade dominicano Herbert McCabe, trata-se de um texto que se inscreve não apenas no campo da teologia política, mas também no âmbito da história das ideias. Tal como outros pensadores, McCabe, um socialista e revolucionário convicto descrito como “católico marxista”, dialogava com o marxismo a partir do cristianismo focando-se num aspecto central: a luta de classes. McCabe argumenta que o imperativo bíblico de fazer justiça, praticar o amor ao próximo e dar testemunho dos valores do Reino obriga os cristãos a juntarem-se aos marxistas na oposição ao capitalismo e na luta pela sua superação. Se o capitalismo tem como base o antagonismo humano, McCabe lembra que o cristianismo anuncia a possibilidade da fraternidade humana. O pensamento desenvolvido neste e noutros textos filosóficos e teológicos de McCabe é ainda hoje muito perspicaz em virtude da forma metódica e rigorosa que adopta. Procurarei cruzá-lo com as reflexões de outros pensadores. Muitos destes contributos para uma conversa produtiva e convergente entre o marxismo e o cristianismo permanecem desconhecidos em Portugal. Portanto, um dos propósitos desta comunicação é também divulgá-los, estudá-los, e continuar um trabalho intelectual que contou com a participação decisiva de McCabe.
